Cara De Silva

CARA DE SILVA is an award-winning journalist who specializes in writing about food, travel, culture, and ethnicity. Most recently, In Memory's Kitchen: A Legacy from the Women of Terezin, which she edited and brought to fruition, was voted one of the most noteworthy books of the year by The New York Times Book Review. "In Memorys Kitchen" is a book compiled of recipes, poems and letters of Mina Pachets and the women of Terezin. However, these are not merely recipes they represent the history and memories of the women of Terezin. These recipes were written by undernourished and underfed women of Terezin (ghetto/ concentration camp). The books gives instructions as to how to make these recipes. The recipes were written on scraps of paper or parchement that could be found, there are some steps and ingredients missing from the recipes. This book is meant as a memory of the women of Terezin who in their own way defied Hitler. These recipes were written down as a way of these women to preserve their traditions. Women in Terezin often discussed and argues over recipes, perhaps it was a way to remind them of their past, perhaps it was because food was such an integral part of the Czekoslovokian culture and perhaps it was a way to of them to be optimistic. "In Memorys Kitchen" provides an insight into the heritage and memories of these brave women of Terezin.
