Richard Manning
Author of Against the Grain and Grassland; environmental investigative reporter
Author Richard Manning talks about modern agriculture and sustainability, especially with regard to the prairie. Was the prairieland of this country more productive in its natural state? Areas of the untouched prairie support 200-300 different species of plants. Crops take away the diversity of the ecosystem. According to Mr. Manning, today's farming practices are fundamentally unsustainable and completely dependent on hydrocarbon fuel (read:oil). Mr. Manning sees the collapse of the current, oil-based farming system as inevitable.
